Over 4000 people in Metropolitan Kansas City participated in our 2008 Earth Day Festivities. Six area festivals in communities like Westport, The Westside, Troost corridor and Lakeside celebrated the planet with environmental puppet shows, craft activities, community awareness projects and assistance in building our giant puppets. The spring's events culminated with the giant puppet pageant The Spirit of the Wood on the lawn of The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art on Mother's Day for Mother Earth. This original puppet "ballet" featured 29 performers, an original score by composer Jack Sharman, area dancers from City in Motion and Prof. Hap. P Feet and audience participation which told the story of what happens to our vibrant wood filled with 18' walkng trees, dancing butterflies and hordes of frogs when pollution and trash encroach. As life withers our "trash monster" realizes his presences itself is what is causing the problem and with tears of sorrow and clean water changes the world he touches.

This project was presented free of charge to our community through support from The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, The Neighborhood Tourism and Development Fund, Kansas City Parks and Recreation, Missouri Arts Council and Chameleon Arts Caravan.
Plans are underway to continue and expand this project to eight communities in the spring of 2009 and once again culminate in a giant puppet pageant. Call or email to get involved, help support, volunteer or become an important part of our audience!
