StoneLion Puppet Theatre has over 25 years of experience teaching in universities, art institutes, high schools and elementary schools with students of all ages. Individual workshops, artist-in-residencies, and international teacher training can be designed to your specifications. StoneLion is a U.S. State Department funded Arts Envoy and our Artistic Director received the Lighton Prize as Teaching Artist of the Year in 2017. Workshop Ideas For Elementary Aged Students

Compost Cookies

Create your favorite cookie out of a paper plate…but oh no, it got dropped on the floor. Guess you will have to compost it now. Here comes Kyle the red wiggler worm in his compost pile to teach you what can and cannot be composted. Book reading “Kyle in His Compost Pile” by Julie Lehman. Create a worm puppet and add those things that can be composted to your cookie puppet stage. Be careful not to add plastic or even diary because those don’t make for good compost.

Recommended for grades K-2

Puppets Trash Talking or bee pollinator puppet stages

Students create their own puppet stages to wear around  your neck and a  set of rod puppets to create your own play with. Themes include StoneLion's latest puppet series #PuppetsTrashTalking  to learn how trash gets into our water and what we can do to help clean up our planet or how pollination works and why we need the bees.

Recommended for grades 1-4

bird marionettes

Make your own paper marionettes that really flies! Practice the concepts of counterweight and balance while making a simple machine ( STEAM!) . Learn about bird migration, biodiversity and why the bird and you need clean water to be happy and healthy.

Recommended for grades 3-5

RECYCLED TURTLE WORKSHOP

Create a turtle puppet from recyclable materials with a mosaic shell. “Bath” the turtle in clean water to discover how storm water runs and how colors blend while discussing the importance of keeping a clean environment and managing storm-water runoff. 45 minutes. Up to 25 participants Most appropriate for K-3rd grade.

BACKYARD HABITAT IN AN EGG CARTON PUPPET STAGE

Create your own ecosystem in an egg carton and then put on a puppet show. Each participant will be given a native bug, frog or bird to turn into a simple rod puppet while creating a healthy backyard sanctuary for it, all focused on clean water. 45-60 minutes. Up to 25 participants. Most appreciated by 2-5th grade.

PLASTIC WATER BOTTLE FLOWERS

Create stain glass looking flowers out of plastic water bottles and a companion pollinator. This workshop is designed to educate about the need to reduce plastic consumption to keep our waters clean and discuss the need to protect the pollinators by reducing toxins in our environment. 45-60 minutes. Up to 25 participants. Most appreciated for 4th and 5th grade. Uses paint and needs access to water.

WHAT LIVES IN OUR WATER: MICROBE MONSTER PUPPETS

Discover the unseen in our water by looking at photos of chemicals and contaminants in our water system. Participants will then create their own mask or puppet of their microbe monster. 45 minutes. Up to 30 participants. Most appreciated by 3rd-5th grade.

VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR TURN ABOUT SOCK PUPPET WORKSHOP

Based around the book by Eric Carle students will create the three stages of a butterfly's life. An ordinary sock is transformed from a caterpillar, a chrysalis, and finally a butterfly where the students can then act out the story themselves. 45 minutes. Up to 25 participants. Most appreciated by PS-2nd grade. 

MOBILE PUPPET STAGE WORKSHOP

Create your own puppet stage to wear around your neck and rod puppets to put on a mini puppet show. Themes of composting with clay worms, pollination with bee puppets or give us your theme. 45 minutes. Up to 25 participants. Most Appreciated by K-3rd grade.
